Mate having done the outdoor workout stuff and now moved to my own small studio in denver, this is spot on. Perhaps you could add that working out outdoors is against the law in some states. You're officially supposed to get a permit for it. It also restricts growth - I mean, if you get 20 people a class how many times before you get a call from a local council member?

There's many reasons for getting outside as a part of a complete health and wellness package.. but there's a right way and a right body for it....

Aloha,
I love this article, and it is true. Having lived in Hawaii a very long time I have done everything you could imagine outside for clients. I hate exercising outside, (except surfing in of course). Tourists want to train on the beach...ugg, sand everywhere, in your teeth by the time you are done, the hot sun, bugs, wind, ...It gets crazy and wears me out. I try and talk people out of anything on the beach except a stroll, but never between 10 and 3pm. I know I sound jaded and I probably am, but I love a nice temp controlled room and props:) Mahalo Claudia

Well said Anthony! I completely agree. I work with clients who would absolutely throw out their backs if I just threw them out on the hiking trail. Many have had years of muscle imbalances and pain as a result. Once I layer their work outs using whatever tools I can, then I might consider an outdoor hike, but as their trainer, my job is to "train" not just accompany them on a hike! Thanks so much for your insight. I truly appreciate it!

Great insight into using Vibram Five Finger shoes. Recently I wrote about the pros and cons of Barefoot Running - of which Vibram shoes can be a good alternative.
It is important for every Personal Trainer to slowly introduce clients to these shoes and barefoot running - to avoid injury and allow the body to adapt to the changed forces through the foot and lower limb.

Great to hear Sheila. We use this exercise regularly for clients with knee pain who can not perform regular lunges or squats. Great way to give the knee some help from above and facilitate coordination through the extremity. Thanks for your feedback!

Doing the simple, good things in life isn't always easy. In some areas of our lives we are quite self-motivated and our behaviors are consistent and effective. In other areas, perhaps not.

For many otherwise successful people, fitness is an area where they don't function well. In that case, they may benefit from some personal help. People can do better with guidance, structure, and personal support.

Every successful business knows this and that's where employee management comes in to play. Some people can be mentored into self-sufficiency. Others may, in reality, actually need continued coaching or support from another person - for life!

We have created personal training "programs" where we provide much of the support many people need, but not only the limiting, traditional one-to-one approach. With creative, hybrid programs we can lower the cost, get people to put the program into their monthly budget, and try to find just the right amount of support they need to be successful, no more, no less.

Until we can find the way to make certain people fully self-sufficient, this is the best and most reasonable approach we have found.
